Cognitive load is the silent leadership tax

Leaders are not running out of strategy. They are running out of bandwidth. Naming that — and designing for it — is the leadership challenge of our time.

Ask a senior leader what is hard right now and the answer is rarely the strategy. It is the volume — of decisions, of inputs, of expectations, of feelings to hold.

Cognitive load is a tax that gets paid in poor decisions, snappy conversations and a creeping sense that everything is urgent.

Reducing it is leadership work: ruthless prioritisation, fewer meetings and better ones, time to think, and permission for people to say what they actually need.
